Au Cluin thu mi mo nighean donn (Are you hearing me my brown haired maid?)

I’m quite taken with this tune, Au Cluin thu mi mo nighean donn (Are you hearing me my brown haired maid?) by Iain McColl. It’s a Scottish Gaelic air. So someone enlighten me. I am not sure how to define Gaelic versus Scottish versus Irish. I said “Scottish Gaelic” because that’s how it’s described in the booklet that comes with the DVD. Regardless, it’s a lovely tune and quite easy to learn off Play Scottish Fiddle – Intermediate, a DVD I picked up off Amazon.

I tried to find an YouTube video of it or some other rendition but failed.

I have a hard time playing it as slowly as it’s played on the DVD. But I’m working on it.

Good luck with that! I’ve just started working on that tune myself. I’ve probably been using the same video as you (Sarah Naylor is the featured instructor from Teigh na Teudh).

I absolutely love that one and the Braes of Tullymet–I’ve been practicing fiddle for a little over a year now and things are still slow going for me. It takes time, that’s all. You might want to turn off the video and pick the tunes out by ear–that’s what has worked best so far for me.

Keep on plugging away at it! It’s a very captivating tune and you’ll get it with time. I couldn’t do it by following the video as I was playing it either.

I think you’ll find it easiest to just walk your fingers up and down the strings a little as you watch her, then put the dvd on pause and rely on your hearing and the muscle memory in your fingers.

Best of luck and keep playing!
